Combined heat and power (CHP) is an efficient and clean approach to generating electric power and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source.
A CHP unit recaptures the wasted energy from a generator’s hot exhaust and engine cooling systems and re-purposes it into heat for industrial processes, hot water, space heating and even cooling and dehumidification.
As a form of Distributed Generation (DG), CHP’s inherent high efficiency and elimination of transmission losses from a traditional central power plant results in reduced primary energy use and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Thanks to the effective utilization of “waste heat” through the combined production of heat and power, up to an additional 40% of the energy contained in the fuel is saved, compared to the separate production of heat and power.
